What is Women, Peace & Security?
The Women, Peace and Security (WPS) movement centers women’s leadership in building and sustaining democratic and peaceful societies. It prioritizes women’s participation; safety; and leadership; the prevention of conflict; ensuring democratic transitions, and building inclusive, community-driven responses to crises. Recognizing that peace and security are strongest when shaped by the experiences and voices of those disproportionately impacted, especially women.
Rooted in grassroots women’s movements around the world, WPS draws on decades of experience and the leadership of women who have led reconciliation efforts, negotiated ceasefires, safeguarded democracies, and rebuilt communities after violence. Research has consistently shown that when women are fully and meaningfully included in decision-making, the outcomes are more effective, durable, and equitable—not because women are inherently more peaceful, but because diversity of perspectives strengthens solutions.
WPS reminds us that community driven action and advancing women’s leadership and equality is one of the surest ways to prevent violence and strengthen democracy.
As democratic backsliding rises globally, WPS lessons are urgently needed here at home - now more than ever.
